Frequently Asked Questions
(and answers)
Popular Q & A
Why aren't there any doulas in my state?
Simply because they have not yet found MDD or submitted their information to be added to our directory. I assure you, there are affordable doulas in your area - you don't need to worry. Just send MDD a quick email and we'll gather up a few contacts for you.
What is a doula?
A woman experienced in childbirth who provides informational, emotional and physical support to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth; it's a Greek word (doo-luh) and a noun.
Why does MDD ask where I live?
This is so I can accurately place a peg marking your whereabouts on the map. This will prevent multiple pegs piling up in popular cities (like Seattle) and eliminate confusion for potential clients. For example: If I were looking for a doula I wouldn't assume that a doula pegged in Seattle would also serve my city, Kent. I might become discouraged and not think to look further into doula listings, where counties are listed, including my own. Then I might even miss out the opportunity to have a free/low cost doula support me.
Why does Seattle-Tacoma have their own page?
Well, this is where I live and I am very passionate about providing free/low cost doulas to the women and families within my community. I work with some income eligible programs in the area and its really convenient to be able to provide a quick link with all the info. If you would like to request a separate page for your metro area let me know.

Standard Q & A
What is My Doula Directory?
My Doula Directory (MDD) is an online resource help locate doulas in your area that offer free or low cost doula support services.
Who can use MDD?
Anyone who is expecting and interested in doula services and of course, doulas!
How much does it cost?
MDD is a completely free service. It's free for families to use and its free for doulas to list their services.
How does MDD work?
A doula joins MDD by submitting their doula services/business to be listed on MyDoulaDirectory.info. The doula then adds a link on her website (or blog, facebook, twitter, etc.) which then attracts other doulas and expectant parents.
Does MDD tell doulas what to charge?
No! Not at all. MDD is a place where doulas can list their free or low cost services. MDD considers "free and low cost" to mean $0 - $500. It is up to the doula how much she will charge and what discounts she can offer.
Why do you do this?
Well, everyone benefits: families are connected to doulas in their area that offer free or low cost services and doulas are connected to families in need of their support services. As for me, I just run the directory because it makes me feel good knowing that my efforts are making a difference (no matter how small) in someone's life.
How do I know which doula is right for me?
You'll have to meet with each doula to know. Most doulas offer free consultations or "meet n greets" to get to know each other. MDD does not recommend anyone by listing them on this site. MDD is a referral resource only.
Can I use the images throughout MDD?
Not all of them. You are welcome to use the images below (in Buttons, Banners, Badges) however all other images including the MDD banner and quote are protected under copyright. Please contact me if you would like me to create an image/logo or set of images/logo for your personal use.
How come potential clients aren't contacting me?
This could be happening for a number of reasons. You should make sure that all of your contact information is correct and links/comment forms are working properly. You might also want to check your spam filter for any emails. Additionally, be sure that your MDD listing has all the right information. Where are you located? What areas do you serve? How can someone reach you? Do your links take visitors to the right place?
